Trainers

Jerry Hollendorfer is based at Golden Gate Fields and was the trainer of ZTR’s El Mesano at that track.  He is the dominant trainer in Northern California and consistently develops national-caliber graded stakes horses.  Jerry became the fourth trainer in history to reach the 6,000-win milestone, on September 3, 2011. The Kentucky Oaks-winning Champion filly Blind Luck may be the most accomplished of Jerry’s many stakes horses. The list includes King Glorius, his first two Kentucky Oaks winners - Lite Light and Pike Place Dancer - Event of the Year, Tuscan Evening, Heatseeker, Dakota Phone and most recently Eclipse award winning Shared Belief.

Jerry was inducted into the National Racing Museum's Hall of Fame in 2011.  From 1986 through May 2008, he won the training championship at every major Bay Area meeting, recording 37 straight titles at Bay Meadows and 32 consecutive crowns at Golden Gate Fields.  He has won 43 training championships at Golden Gate Fields including the most recently concluded winter/spring meeting.  He currently ranks 3rd in the nation in wins and 6th in money won and has a 24% win percentage in 2013.

Trainer Frank Lucarelli will handle Z Thoroughbred Racing’s stable at Turf Paradise and Emerald Downs in 2015. Frank has been training for 34 years and has enjoyed success at Longacres racetrack before expanding his operations.  In 2009, Frank recorded his 1,000th win and tallied $1,304,000 in earnings. His cumulative career earnings are $17,423,000.

Frank now has 1,459 total wins and has divisions based at Turf Paradise in Phoenix, Arizona and Golden Gate Fields in Albany, California as well as Emerald Downs in Auburn WA.  Emerald Downs conducts live racing April 12 - September 28 in 2014.

A top trainer at Emerald Downs, Lucarelli won the 2012 training title for the 2nd straight year with 43 wins finishing 2nd in wins in 2013 and 2014.  Lucarelli won both the 2012 Governor's and Budweiser Handicaps with Winning Machine, and in 2010 won the Washington's Lottery Handicap with Rewritten, the Auburn Stakes with Posse Power, and the Federal Way Handicap with Feeling Fancy, all races with purses of $50,000.  Lucarelli’s charge, Gallant Son won the 2011 $80,000 Robert K. Kerlan Memorial Handicap at Hollywood Park and the 2013 Albany and Oakland Stakes at Golden Gate Fields.  Lucarelli saddled the 2012 Breeder’s Cup Filly & Mare Turf runner Stormy Lucy, and won the $200,000 Grade 2 Santa Ana Stakes with her in 2014.

Lucarelli, 56, a former minor league pitcher, has won five training titles and ranks second all-time with 803 wins at Emerald Downs. Frank took out his trainer's license in 1979 after being released from Bakersfield (Class A California League) baseball club.

"I love it," said Lucarelli of the training profession. "I love the business. I don't ever see myself retiring. I may back off a little at some time but I don't see myself not getting up and going to the track."

former owner/breeder and

Oregon TBOA Board Member

Z Thoroughbred Racing LLC was founded by Steve Zerda in 2010 to bring the opportunity for thoroughbred ownership to more racing fans in the Pacific Northwest and Arizona.  Steve is formerly a successful airline executive whose interest in horse racing began back in 1978 when he calculated Beyer figures by hand for races at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park, and Del Mar.  A follower of horses of that era such as Vigors, John Henry, and Flying Paster, Steve has studied pedigree analysis and conformation to enable the acquisition of quality stock for racing.

Steve owned a part of the multiple Grade 1 winning filly Turbulent Descent before she was sold to Coolmore, the international racing and breeding operation, in July of 2012.  In 2010, Turbulent Descent was the winner of the Moccasin Stakes, the Hollywood Starlet (G1) , and was an Eclipse Award finalist.  In 2011 Turbulent Descent won the $250,000 Test Stakes (G1) at Saratoga, the $250,000 Santa Anita Oaks (G1) in stakes record time and the $150,000 Beaumont Stakes (G2) at Keeneland.  TD was the  favorite to win the 2011 Breeder’s Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Churchill Downs where she finished a troubled 5th.   While Steve owned her she had 7 wins in 11 starts with three Grade 1 wins and earnings of $902,640.
